I have 1999 Subaru Legacy. I have 175K miles on it now. I've heard they can last almost 300K, but you never know when you get in the high mileate. My commute to work goes up and down hills and turns, so I put more wear and tear on my car. I have a 2.5 Liter motor, anyone had their Subaru motor rebuilt, and if so, how much did it cost?

I live in Northern California in Auburn (North of Sacramento). Right now the motor is doing ok. It uses a little bit of oil, but that's not to uncommon with higher milage. At about 152K, my head gasket blew. I had the head machined, replaced the water pump, and timing belt. I think I could get another year or two on the motor.
But if you or anyone in CA can get me a quote on cost: 1999 Subaru Legacy SUS (Sedan) 2.5 Liter

I did check on company. They are expensive. They cost about 1K +shipping.
I'm curious what a rebuild costs, so I can compare that to a replacment motor.

Any subie engine will need belts and other parts. The 2.2 engine is a very good one. The turbo engine was the 2.2 engine.

Can you rebuild it on your own? Here is several rebuild kits. You may still need to have the heads rebuilt. Be sure to check the crankshaft. A local machine shop can to that too.

Good luck.

As a mechanic I could never give a "Hard Estimate" on rebuilding. I usually have to do a tear down and inspect/measure to see what parts are really needed. I have done a Jap replacement on a Subaru and 80K later it still runs perfect, not a bad way in my opinion. Even with a replacement you still want to do a T-belt,waterpump etc.

Well I don't expect a "hard estimate", but a rought estimate would be nice. Yes I agree with a replacemtn on the T-belt and Water pump, and Spark plugs too! At least on the 2.5 liter, even the mechanic I had do the head gasket says he has trouble getting the spark plugs out on this motor.
