I started my new 355 sbc for cam break in and after about 5 minutes of running at about 2000 RPMs I smelled something burning shut it off and looked to see the headers red hot like see through red hot. Whats the deal here?

Timing is off, it's lean, or the muffler/convertor is stopped up. I've seen all of the above at one time or another...

How do you set the timing in a new motor that isnt broken in yet? The exhuast is quite free with out cats. I have never had this problem before. I even changed metering rods to fatten it up while I broke it in. I am guessing it is timing because the old motor ran fine with out problems when I peeled it out.

The timing is retarded, set it and forget it. If you have everything set up, you can time the motor the instant it fires up. 30 seconds idling or at 3000rpm wouldn't kill it.

When you first start up just turn the dist. until the engine runs smooth and free and worry about timing when the break in is complete

TJ thats usually how I do it other than make it run smoothe first I usually seem to get it in the ball park when I drop it in and once it fires off I am upwards of the 2000-2500 RPM instantly and then I get the timing light out and dial it in once the cam is broken in. I have been impatient during this project My wife is scheduled for a c- section in the next week and things have been hectic. My plan was to get the truck up and running before the baby is born and I was sick of waiting for someone to give me a hand so I pretty much said to myself here it goes today is going to be the day and its going to run come hell or high water.

8O You are one brave man out working on your truck with the wife expecting and anything can happen. :) Running lean or rich make your headers glow but then again they are glowing red when you are driving as well.

I should have known better to start a project in such times. I have been up at the hospital since 11:00am. The Dr decided to do an emergency C-section. We had a 5 pound 6 ounce boy tonight. I better get back up there I just ran home to check on a few things and grab a snack. I guess I wont know what the real problem is for a while until things get back to normal.
