I finally had a chance to check the LUV out and if you read my "Luv doesn't like oil" part 1 then you know I had oil shooting out from the vacumme lines and oil fill hole when I revved. Here is what I found out, to my astonishment! I pulled the dipstick and oil started pouring out!! WTF? I checked the oil that came out and it smelled like gas. So I drainied all of the oil and I was able to pull out about 11 quarts of fluid. I'm pretty sure these truck can use that much (sarcasm). After trouble shooing it looks like I may have a bad check relief valve. As the vacumme diagram shows the return fuel line is attached to the valve as well as the vcumme line coming from the crankcase. If anyone has any other suggestions as to what it may be I'm all ears. Thanks alot guys!!

Does it have a mechanical fuel pump? I have heard of them going bad, leaking gas into the crankcase, don't know how to check other than replacing.

I think the previous owner may have installed an electric fuel pump cause when I turn the key to acc I hear what sounds like an electric fuel pump running. I will look into the mechanical pump just to be sure. Sorry to be in such a hurry guys but its just that I want to get the truck on the road. Thanks again!!

Your LUV being an '80 would have only one electric fuel pump, just in front of the tank. You can see it just in front of the left rear wheel, if you stick your head up in there.

Copied from another member.......

Someone on here was telling me that I had a faulty vapor recovery valve and while I'm not completely sure what that is or how to fix it I was reading up on the charcoal cannister and was wondering if I could retro fit it onto mine? I want to be able to use a non-vented gas cap and eliminate any need for a vented one. I also have a weber carb an offy intake and exhaust headers. When I had a non-vented cap on mine it was pressurizing the tank and putting gas into my oil and shoving it out my rear main seal. I just want to make sure everything is working as efficiently as possible. Thanks in advance guys!

If you have a after market pump that is runninf too much pressure it will end up in the crank case. Get a gauge in line and check it out, you dont wannt to be over 5 or so PSI.

I'll be following this thread daily. I bought a 79 Luv a little while ago and just got it running fine. I checked the oil and noticed it was all the way up the dip stick. I decided to change it again, (ok i was curious) and I ended up draining over 10 quarts out of it. It overflowed my 6 qt drain pan. I emptied it into my recycle container and then drained another 4+ quarts out of it. It was really heavily soaked with gas. I found thism topic today and can't believe it's an active thread about my same problem. Not trying to steal the thread. Just following along. I'll post my actions and results if it will help. I probably won't get alot done now until after Christmas. PHXLT1 if you get it figured out....I'd appreciate any info you can Post about it. By the Way. MERRY CHRISTMAS Everybody.

Not a problem at all Karl. I'm going to dig deeper this weekend and check the plugs to see what they look like and then run a leak down test and as suggested check out the psi for the fuel. I'll post what I find and maybe we can get both of our trucks going! :esmile

Cool, I know I have a weak cylinder. When I got the truck the #4 plug was fowled about as bad as possible. It wa caked on pretty bad. I pulled the coil wire loose and turned the engine over and can definitely tell a difference on one of the cylinders by the way it cranks through it quickly. I''m going to do a compression check and make sure all my vaccuum lines are open. Especially the ones going through that little valve on the firewall. I'll post what I come up with. Have a Merry Christmas.

For reference this is what I have, it might help some to know:
1979 Luv4x4 with 143,000 miles on original engine and manual tranny.
The pollution pump and lines have been removed and the openings going into the head have been plugged.
Valve adjustment was just accomplished, they were WAAAAYYYYY out of tolerance.
Truck had been sitting for a couple years when I bought it.
Original Hitatchi carb.
Electric fuel pump
Even though we've been below zero for almost two weeks it starts and runs like a top and idles about as smooth as I can expect.
Changed the spark plugs. I was going to do a full tune-up, (wires, cap, rotor) but I was planning to drop in an Electronic Distributor and also install a Weber Carb. After I got all that straight, I was going to pull the engine and go through it for a Rebuild.
I'll keep my actions posted.

Karl

My engine is shot. I've been checking a few things today (finally decent weather here) and it's definitely time for a rebuild. My compression is as follows for each cylinder, #1-105psi, #2-97psi, #3-85psi and #4-40psi. I actually checked each cylinder twice just to be sure. I can't believe it runs as smooth as it does but at least now I know why it has no power at all. Hopefully this is the reason for filling the oil pan with gas. Everything else seems to be working fine. It idles fine and takes the gas without hesitation. Just has no compression/power along with the gas and oil issue. I can't wait to feel the power of all 70+ horsepower after I rebuild it  ....whenever that is. Soon I hope though. Thanks for all the inputs guys.
