To make a long story short I took my old short block to the machine shop. The guy at the shop said I should have the block decked because it makes horsepower. Now I can understand decking it to get it squared up and that removing a little material will somewhat increase compression but how much of a difference is there going to be. Am I missing something here?

It will help you get that last little bit of power. Most of the advertized compression ratios are calculated with the deck at either zero or .05 under. If you have a deck where the piston is .15 under or so, then your 11:1's are around 10:6 or thereabouts...

Most of the time we did it to ensure the block surface was flat and parallel to the main bearing... On and on from there. Like mytmouz said, same with milling a head, it will raise the compression a little.

Ok thats pretty much what I figured. The man acted like it was going to add some kind of super power that I wasnt aware of. The heads have been milled to the extreme and I dont know how much he plans to remove from the deck. This motor is suppose to be a street motor I hope I dont end up with too much compression.

Quench is where the power is made . You need an effecient combustion chamber .

Once again Im not trying to sound dumb but can someone explain what exactly quench is? I have heard it a million times and I should know what it is but I am a little confused about it.

decking the block is actually better than milling the heads and has more effectivness raising the compression ratio. This even more so true with small chamber heads. when you mill the block it actually reduces the space over the whole piston surface. Where as with the heads the way the head is designed it does reduce the vloume near as much. I have done quite a few in the past and could not beleave how bad some of the decks were. another thing to think about is if you are doing a rebuild and going back with dish pistons. most engines came with a .022 steel shim head gasket. if you go with something like the typical felpro unit of .034 you could be knocking off another 1/2 point or so on your compression ratio. so it would not hurt to have them take the difference off. The engine will still run fine with the thicker gasket if you don`t mill it but will hurt performance some

Im scared to figure out what my compression ratio is going to be. My heads have been milled alot for comression. The heads I am going to be using came off of a circle track car before the rules changed allowing after market heads. They have been milled for compression and worked over in every aspect. I just got a call tonight from the machine shop telling me I can pick up my parts tomorrow morning.
