 Post subject: Coat hanger brazing
PostPosted: Tue May 06, 2003 7:13 am
Just wanted to know if anyone has ever done this before. I remember many moons ago, when i was a little kid the guy next door rebuilt old model "a"s,and old mustangs. He would use brass looking coat hangers to braze in sheet to reconstruct areas that were rusted out.I dont live there anymore, so i really cant ask him about it.

I've tried using a coat hanger on my arc welder but it made more of a mess compared to the sticks you buy at the store with flux on them.

The quality is not good at all but it can be done. There are far to many better solutions out there now to even consider this as an option. Unless you just want to play around. If you come by the house and help me with my wiring John I can show ya how it's done!

yep its possible...but why?..you can get a pound (more than most ppl need) of flux coated brazing rods for just a few dollars at a welding shop.

or if you wanna....get the uncoated rods and the powder flux..but then you gotta heat the rod first and dip in in the flux.....
i use the coated rods b/c im a lazy bastard :P

No , really i was just wondering because he rebuilt show cars , and he would only use that and that alone ...he swore by it being the best fix. I have used all kinds of brazing rods flux filled and not ...and the prosess was done by a torch with propane and oxigen or act. Mig welder is out of the question.. Im talken about in the late 60s. Did they have those back then?Chevette 4x4 Your g-p any good at it? I dont think ya could do it with an ark welder ....Unless ya want to catch your hair onfire! Po boy if ya need help with your wireing , i would say that you need to seek help elsewhere.. for im kinda ignorant when it comes to that subject!!....Hey, Husker whats your friends reasons for using coat hangers?.. Is it the alloy?

I believe it has to be a brass coat hanger. It works. thats an old school hot rod trick. I have done it before. you have to use Oxy Acetylene torch.
