I have access to a full machine shop now, know how to use mill, lathe, cnc, ect... I am building a cheap drag engine... I have a set of ported and milled heads, fair sized cam (unknown specs), holley 4bbl, edelbrock intake. I have a 4 bolt main 350, and was wondering: would it be practical to mill the crowns off the stock pistons to make them flat tops, then mill the block so the pistons come mabey 5 thousandths out of the block? I can do this, but how would milling the block that much affect head/intake alignment?

Most domed pistons have a hollow dome to keep the weight down. Turn the piston over and look, you can usually tell. If it's hollow, no can do. When you have the pistons coming up out of the bore, you start getting into piston/valve clearance issues. Mocking up and checking the distance is the best way to tell. You can compensate by increasing the head gasket thickness, but that defeats the purpose of getting the piston as close to the head as possible.

Throw the dish stock pistons away as they are cast and will not last long.

As for comp.a flat top piston with zero deck clearance and a .040 thick gaskit will net you about 9.2-9.4 comp. with a 78cc head.
