To make it easy use a carb and a 700r4 instead of the f/i and 4l60 and you can use the most of the factory harness. If not plan on using the entire harness off of the 96.

I second that, go with a carb. If you really have to go EFI and can't get the whole wireing harness from the 1500, you can probably buy a new harness from somebody like Painless Wiring. However, they cost like $500, if they make one for something that new. It might be cheaper to have an automotive electrician build you whatever wiring you are missing.

Good luck, I'm sure it will be worth the work when its done, it sounds pretty sweet.

i realy wont to keep the efi on thoes 1500 they got around 18+ mpg pulling a full sized the toyato with a 4 banger 4 speed no overdrive gets about 20 mpg i bet the 350 vortec would get that or better i will add hederes cold air intak with a better mass air flow senser i wont to have the truck to drive and get good gas millage but somthing that will run with about anything on the street i think this would be a happy median for me i found a fule pump that will let me keep the stock toyato gas tank but support the efi has anyone even messed with these 350 vortecs at all ?

The only time I ever worked on one was to swap out the injectors and wiring harness. Chevy had a recall on them. I forget what year it was, but it was a mid 90s 2 door Tahoe. I remember it was one of the most miserable days I ever spent working on a rig. It took a long time, there was a lot of unnecessary crap in the way and I cursed at it multiple times. Usually I can cope with it, except that changing injectors on anything else is simple. I was just pissed that a simple task got transformed into a clusterf*ck.

I strongly disagree........ I now can honestly say that the EFI wiring harness is not as hard to do as you would think. I put a 98 Vortec 350 in my LUV and It Runs great...... Only problem so far is the decision on what dash to use. Thinking about a cyberdyn. And you can have the Computer reprogrammed for around $150 bucks to match rear end Ratios shift points removing rear O2's etc. Keep the Fuel Injection. You will love it in the long run as far as reliability and economy. And the best thing I can say is get as much of the wiring harness as possible if not the whole thing. There are plenty of wiring diagrams available to keep you on the right track.

Oh and if the harness is the problem search Ebay for a standalone harness for around $75. And use the factory harness.

Hell, if you have the whole truck, then go for it. There shouldn't be anything you CAN'T do. Usually the worst part of swaps like that are finding all the necessary parts, but it sounds like you got it covered. Good luck, and keep us posted.
