I have had some crazy thoughts in my head today. I have been really thinking hard about building a 350 for my truck and how I want to build it. First off I was thinking somewhere in the ball park of around 400 hp and I would like it as cheap as possible. The second thing is I havent bought any parts or even a block yet. Now here is where I get crazy. I have a small journal 327 in my truck that is fresh. I have a set of .20 over forged flat top pistons in it with some El cheapo machine shop rebuilt heads on it that I wouldnt use other than that it is all fresh but in pretty much OEM condition. The 327 is a small journal unit with the steel crank. I know the 327 is down on cubic inches but if I got a good set of heads cam and intake for it would I be better off than just building a budget street beater 350?

You'll need heads, cam and intake on the 350. The cubic inches you gain with the 350 will help you hit the hp mark easier. I'd drive the 327 if it was me, while I built the 350. Then you could sell the 327 and get some of your money back.

All depends on what you are using it for. I have seen some MEAN full roller 331ci. These motors will twist 8000 over and over and still live. 400 hp would be fairly easy to obtain with a 327. However the torque will not be there as in a 350 or 383. If you are using it as a driver spend a little money on the cam and heads for the 327 and drive the wheels off of it. It will have more than enough power for the street. If you are going to drag race I am a firm believer in " There is no replacement for displacement" So go bigger than a 350. Unless of course you are going to spray then thats a whole new ballgame. :D

My truck is going to be used mainly for just driving around town its not a daily driver it sits in the garage where my LUV did and its mainly just a hobby. I would like to take it to the strip and run it in the street legall class once in while if I just decide thats what I want to do that day but and I plan on staying away from nitrous . The truck is set up with a 12 bolt rear 4.10 gears detroit locker and Turbo 400. I also have a set of Doug THorley TRI Y headers with dual 2 1/2 exhuast with 40 series flowmaster mufflers. I got the truck with out a motor but it was set up with a about a 450 hp 350 before I got my hands on it and it was fun to ride in I would just kinda like to get it some where in the neighbor hood of where it was before.

depends on what you want to do with the truck.. if it was me.. i'd get a 350 bore it .030" over and have a 355. northern auto has a cheap 350 rebuild kit that you can upgrade. you get basically everything you need to build a 350 aside from the main parts like block, heads, intake, and exhaust manifolds. not to mention the added low end torque a 350 will produce because of the longer stroke, but it's still got a 4" bore so it will breathe at higher rpms. of course this is for a mostly street/some strip combo. if you want a little extra top end horsepower without sacrificing too much or any low end torque... get a dual plane.. like a eddy performer rpm.. and cut about 1.5" to 2" out of the divider wall making sure you curve everything up.
