Im getting ready to build a new motor and after looking through a few catalogs at parts my curiosity about the rods has me wondering. Since I will be pretty much be putting a together a all new motor for my truck that is not a daily driver that will see some in town cruising and some trips to the drag strip its basically just a toy. Its not like I would be tearing down a motor just to change the rods so the cost isnt the issue since I will be needing to buy rods either way. What are the advantages to the 6 inch rod over a 5.7? Im not sure if I am going to keep the motor in its orignal configuration or make a 383 out of it at this point. I dont plan on using nitrous. I once heard something about 6 inch rods dont like nitrous I dont know why that it is or if it is even true. Any theorys out there would be greatly appreciated.

I usually run whatever length rod I need for whatever pistons I scrounge up. If I was to buy new, I'd get 6 inch, just cause it resales a bit better. As for the 6 inch rods not liking nitrous, you want the piston ring land to be away from the top, and the wrist pin as much as possible. The 6 inch rod will sometimes need a spacer on the oil ring set up due to the wristpin location. I never found it to be a problem though. I have a 4.00 inch stroke crank, 6 inch rods, JE pistons and 2 nitrous systems on mine, so I think for street duty you would be fine. The cost is pretty much the same, again this is if you are buying new.

Yeah I have noticed the price of the rods are usually the same but I have noticed the price on the pistons are a little higher for a 6 inch rod. What is the actuall benefit of using a 6 over a 5.7. Im trying to build a street/strip motor on a budget and I want to spend the money in a smart way that will give me the most hp.

Not enough performance difference for the cost except for the earlier mentioned resale.

I still havent had a chance to yank out the block but im pretty sure its going to be a 2 piece main. I found a crank from scat that I am probably going to buy it sounds like what you have. I have one other option that I am going to check into from speedway they have a complete 383 kit but not sure of the main journal size. I would Ideally like to find a crank that is going to fit the 350 mains. Its going to be a slow process Im doing a little at a time as money allows but I do have the heads ready to go.
