Scored a set of heads tonight they are suppose to have bent valves. Can I buy new valves and install them or do they have to go to a machine shop first?

It's doubtful the valve angles will be the same. I'd take 'em in...

Im not sure which specific engine it is.

well the heads are at the machine shop now I was told the valves are not 2.05s they are actually 2.02s. they were .100 longer than stock and ended up that 9 valves totall were bent. The guy working on them told me that there isnt a reason they needed to be longer and price wise it would be cheaper to run the stock length valves and get all new ones rather than buy 9 to replace the longer ones. Good thing I took them in because the heads were used on a 400 and the steam holes were jacked up and would have caused problems not to mention I didnt catch the dent left in the one cylinder where the piston slammed into it. I just got off the phone with the machinist and now he is telling me that the springs I have are too big for the way it was previously cut so now its going to need a new set of springs and they have also been milled so much that I have to have my intake manifold milled to fit.

The valves are usually longer to prevent coil bind on the springs when running a large lift cam. New springs to match the cam and new valves are a good idea. Looks like you'll have a fresh set of heads for at least half price...

cant you use a thicker head gasket to offset the milling so you dont have to mill your intake manifold?

I guess if it were milled an extreme amount it wouldnt matter how thick the gaskets were.

These heads orignally were used on a circle track motor where the rules at the time stated you had to use a cast iron factory head so I think what happened was they milled the crap out of them to get more compression and on top of that I have had to have them milled too so I am guessing from what the machine man told me that the intake manifold will need to be hacked up too. I dont know how good the cast iron summit brand heads are but I can say I could have bought a pair of those and some other parts for the money I now have into these Im kinda thinking I spent too much on on what I will be getting in the long run. Maybe Im wrong I dont know. The machinist is a friend of my brothers who said he is only charging me half price for this and that and throwing in parts for his cost he claims ,so I am hoping with my limited amount of experiance dealing with this sort of thing Im not actually getting raped.

Picked up the heads from the machine shop today they are all ready to go now. They are good to about .570 lift he said. not like I will be going that big anyway but at last they are done.
