I've decided to be a little more responsible and work on the big truck. It's got 170K miles on it and other than bad valve guide seals, it runs great. Getting a master kit is easy but locating a cam is a bit tougher. It's computer controlled so im not looking for a performance unit. I might go for 1.6 rockers and TBI riser but that will be it. Does anyone have a source for a good cam?

Blue.. I've never had a 4.3 so I know squat about them.. but on some of the S-10 forums, they have a lot of info on those motors...

all of the big cam companies should make a cam for it. I would try Comp or Crower. If all fails, call Jerry at Schneider Cams here in San Diego. He will take your old one and regrind it to some triple throwdown mofo tire burner super wazoo bump stick.

You can always get a 350 cam and put it on a band saw.... lol.

I've checked on cams with Crane, Comp and Edelbrock but the info doesn't seem to jive between the 3 companies for a 93 (Z code) engine. One company will say that they can only make it for a non-computerized setup, another will state that a 93 engine has a balance shaft and some will say that it's a roller cam.
I just want a replacement cam for a stock rebuild. The motor has 170,000 miles on it with bad valve guide seals. A fresh engine in the daily driver would pep things up and possibly increase the gas mileage.

I would check a TRW or Speed Pro (or other Federal Mogul Brand). Many times your local Vato Zone or Kragen can order parts out of that catalog for you. Just for entertainment purposes, have you called a Chevy dealership? or GM Performance Parts catalog?

Since you're looking for a stock cam profile for that motor, you could also send it out to a place like Schneider or other cam grinder and have them "dust" it

Im pretty certian that this motor doesn't have a balance shaft. But it's not clear if i have a roller hydraulic setup. Im still determining this as of now.

if its a late model motor then it most likely is a hydraulic roller. just pull the intake and you will have your answer.... OR you could look at the length of the pushrod. Roller lifters us a shorter pushrod than a regular solid or hydraulic. dont know what a balance shaft is on those cams

At this point i cant start disassembling anything because the truck is vital. If i could have gotten all my ducks in a row first, like parts, hoist, machine shop and such, I can keep the downtime to a minimum. Until i can be certian about exact parts, the truck is staying together.

A 4.3 is 3/4 of a 350 and there are lots of cams out there. I would call Comp Cams. They have the most grinds of anybody. They have techs that can tell you anything you need. I'n going to get one of the hydraulic cams that idles well, but when it reves up you get the full potential of the higher oil pressure with the cam. They allow you to get good mileage, but when you hammer down on it, the lifters pump up and you get full advantage of all the lift and the higher r.p.m.s The best of both worlds. I hear that idle ok, but you don't get the radical idle of a race cam. So it will be somewhat of a sleeper.
