 Post subject: Auto Transmission woes

I got a 91 geo prism aka toyota corolla from my dad with a bad tranny. He heard a loud pop one day and the car wouldn't shift out of first gear. I picked up the car and drove it slowly home and the it made a slight whine. After about five miles the car revved like it in neutral and wouldn't go any further. I let it sit for about fifteen minutes and started the car again and it drove for another quarter mile before revving again. Any ideas? I plan to get a salvage tranny and sell the car if I don't get any ideas. Thanks

my guess would be rebuild time. Or swap in a used one.
