My son pulled my trailer home from the desert with his 94 F250, 460, 4 spd. auto trans. When I went to put the trailer in the driveway, I put it in drive, but it did nothing. I had to rev up a lot, and then it would shift into gear and move. If i let off it went back to neutral. Reverse worked fine. This morning, it worked fine for him and he drove it to work.
It has about 120,000 miles on it.

We are going to service it first and see what happens. But if that doesn't help,
Question is.... Are we looking at a front pump or a rebuild?

If you have to pull the trans you can bet on doing a rebuild as you are at about the right miles for that trans to go out and getting it hot pulling a trailer didn't do it any good. The problem you had backing it up was probably do to trans temp. being way high. Now that it has cooled down it may work for quite a while with out problems but it will go out some time though. Service the trans and put as big of a trans cooler you can get in it (witch is one of the problems) and that will help the life of the trans.

probably E4OD trans... slush box. common sense tells me you can stick a fork in that tranny BUT i do recall one instance where a friend of mine experienced similar issues and so he went in and changed trans fluid and filter and then proceded to put about 20K more miles on it before he ended up selling the truck...
Trans worked fine the day it rolled out of his driveway.
Very rare occurance but it happens sometimes. I would be leary about trusting it on a long trip out to the dez. theres nothing worse than trying to figure out how to get your rig and tow vehicle home when stuck in the middle of the hot dez.
