Did you know practically every new car has a black box that records about 10 seconds of data before and during an accident? Did you know that prosecutors are now using that info to convict people involved in accidents? Scary big-brother stuff here buddy. And no one was told about these things until people are being put behind bars.

I don't blame manufacturers for installing these things. I blame the first guy to use it to prosecute someone.

Yep, I dont think I ever want a vehicle newer than 94 with all the "safety" addons!! I seen a few years ago about them starting to put those boxes in cars and using them to track teenage drivers habits as it records vehicle speeds. I hate the stop light cameras too. So sad as you never know what the original intenions of these inventions were for good or evil.

It gets better. Starting soon the cars will have a transponder, when you pass a truck weight scale and you are not current on registration, you will be on foot via a program that will shut down your engine management.

The Corvette was one of the first cars to be fitted with a "Black Box". And yes , the insurance companies would yank it out immediatly to get info. Customers were never told of these devices and lawsuits were filed againts GM for not disclosing this. I dont know what the outcome was. Disabling the box was a common thing to do but now that can get you in trouble with the law AND the insurance company.
Big brother sucks...

This is way everything I own is old. Newest thing I own is my 80 model Luv. I speculated when they started putting own star and GPS in vehicles. I just don't like the idea of driving down the street, and for whatever reason be, a satellite tells the computer in my car to shut the engine down.

This just doesn't settle well with me for some reason, should fall under evasion of privacy in my book. but thats our government at it's best. it decides whats right and wrong for us.

I am just waiting for the day that all this happens and they decide to outlaw all models not equipped with these certain "safety" features.

I don't like the new system but I will continue to buy new cars. The thought of having only a older car is scarey to me, I do enjoy driving my new cars as well. Lets keep one thing in perspective, driving in the U.S. is a privilege not a right.

In the thirties Social Security numbers were NOT supposed to be a way of tracking people. I don't even remember what the reason for the SS number was supposed to be. When ever they find a new way to track you, they will do it. It might not start out that way, but it always ends up that way. The internet is a good example. Tracking your driving comes down to more money for the insurance companies and local government. If you can shut somebody down while they are running from the police I'm for that, but they can just as easily track where you go, and what your driving habits are. I can see a time when they will be able to suspend your drivers license for what you do while in a car even when you don't get a ticket or have an accident. Big Brother is not upon us, he's already here, and has been for a while, and he's recording everything. The why is easy to figure out.

Thanks to some helpful links posted on another site, I've discovered that only about 2/3 of vehicles have these. GM and Ford are the two big players. Toyota has them but only uses them for internal use, meaning they won't surrender the information for prosecution. Nissan, Honda, BMW, and a few others don't have them.

I realize Larphead is somewhat kidding...but, I do have an old accel dual point distributor stashed back just in case. And Toyota may not release it now, but a subpoena would probably change their mind.
