well.. i am putting the bottom end of the 350 back together and i am assembling the oil pump to throw back in there. and the screen will not mate with the pump.. i push and push and nothing!

is there a trick or what? i assume that it is a dry fit due to holding reasons.. but i am getting frusterated! i dont want to hammer.. it is purty brittle

It should fit in with some force, but not too much. I usually tack weld the pick up tube to the pump as sometimes they like to fall off. You should not be having that much of a problem, try to mic them to see how much of a difference there is between the pump hole and the pick up tube.

It is a close tolerance fit. It should be tight so it wont work it's way loose and create oil pressure loss. Driving it in to place with a rubber mallet is normal.

i've had this problem in a pontiac motor.. i just put the tube in as far as I could by hand and then found an open ended wrench around the raised ridge on the pickup tube and tapped it in with a hammer.. no worries with screwing up the tube

well i get over to anthonys house, adn hes trying and trying to get this pickup tube in the pump. he gets mad enough to say that he wants to use the stock old oil pump. so i take the rubber mallet and i get the pickup line up and with 2 smacks of the mallet the pickup is in and anthony is cussin up a storm. we ended up puttin a nice fat tach weld on it to keep it in place. i think it gonna be all good!!

Ha Ha Ha. I cant help but laugh. We all have been in a situation like this. I cant count how many times i've hit a snag and cant figure something out and a fellow grearhead can walk up and clear the problem in 2 seconds.

After building my sb400, i test drove the truck down the Hwy for a few miles and realized that the tach reading was around 3600. I thought my trans wasn't shifting to 3rd (this was the first run with the new trans too). I didn't feel a shift so i checked the fluid level, the kickdown cable. I even went back to the guy i got the trans from to ask him about it. I thought i was going to have to pull the truck apart to get the trans fixed.
I talked to a sb 400 expert and told him about my trans problem and he asked " Did you remember to reset your tachometer setting for 8 cyl?" I had a 4.1 Buick V-6 before the motor swap. I thought "The tach?!?!?!"
Damn! I'm a dumbass for over looking something so simple.

When it's your problem, stuff like this happens. When it's your buddy's problem, you're the answer man.

True that. I've been on both sides of the problem myself.

All you can do is to try and stay on the positive. The bottom end is complete and you'll never, ever have that problem again.

The proper way would be to seat the tube at the oil pump housing and should press in with about 20lbs of pressure, on a press, moderately...

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE PICKUP TUBE FULLY DEPRESSED INTO THE OIL PUMP HOUSING OR IT WILL FALL OUT LIKE ONE  IVE SEEN RECENTLY.

One should also take into matters the clearancing of this pickup tube in relationship to the oil pan being used.
Too close and you will starve the pump demand; too far and oil movement will airate the demand and oil pressure drops will occur-not to mention DAMAGE!!!!

There is also a bracket availble aftermarket thru any supplier (Jegs, PAW, etc etc) that you can slip around the pickup tube that is secured to one or two of the oil pump bolts that will prevent this tube from leaving the oil pump housing!
This is for a SBC or a BBC...

Good luck!

I think everybody has been in that situation at one time or another... at least you dont have a-hole friends like me that get pissed that you dragged them over for something stupid so they go over and hit your key and then hook a lead up to your Mallory Voltmaster coil and then touch you with the other end... yes this has happened before.
