Would that welder handle all my welding needs on building up a 4x4 LUV? Extending the frame and what not? Or would a MIG welder be needed?

Well, if your doing stuff like frame work and heavy duty stuff. They're a very good welder, it was what I was trained to use as well, except mine had AC/DC+/DC- controls. Now if your doing stuff like assembling peices of sheet metal then you should use a MIG. I would rec. an arc welder for the stuff you'll be up to.

ah the old lincoln "buzz box" those things are classic man.

my uncle has one that he has had for over 30 years. bastard is INDESTRUCTABLE!! 8O its been hauled around in the back of a shop truck. dropped from the back of said shop truck a few times. left outside more times than i can count, kicked, and generaly beat the hell up.
still welds like a champ. ive used it many many times. you CAN in fact do sheetmetal w/ a stick welder. its tricky and you need small (like 1/16 6013) rods and lots of patients but its doable. a autodarking helmet really helps too.

The shop I used to work for had an old AC lincoln buzz box with a DC converter added to it. I think it had to be at least 20 years old pretty much abused to hell and back. Then we got one of the big Miller matic MIG welders and I still prefered to use the Lincoln. I used it for about 3 years and all I did was replace the main on/off switch.

my friend gave me a buzz box a while back. I loved it. thats actually what I learned to weld with when i was in highschool metal shop. i ended up giving it back to him but missed it a lot so i bought one of these last week http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/D ... mber=91811
i know what ur thinking... China freight. it will probably break in the first year but i got the extended warranty on it and for $200 its the cheapest TIG i could find. (next cheapest TIG i could find is the Hobart for $800) I'll let you know how it works.

I was actually gonna buy one of those last week but had to give my dad another chunk of $$ for re-building the trans and swappin the rear for me.

We just bought this one

It works ok, see my old boss quit and took all the tools he had plus he had stools in the pit so we can stand on them and work on cars, well he took them except for the one that was broken, I used that welder to fix the cracks in the legs and cross memebers and holds great, even a fat guy at work stands on it and it won't budge. But when your welding with it, it sorta' sounds like the wire is binding somewhere, the cords are stretched out so it's not there so we're geussing it's the tension on the wire, gotta mess with it some.

inside the welder door where the spool sits there should be a little knob to adjust the traction on the wire feed. i'd tighten it up a little and see if that helps feed the wire without straining. i had a chicago electric mig 130 and it welded ok but it had a bunch of little stuff breaking on it all the time. I finally got sick of it and sold it only to get desperate for a welder again and buy another harbor freight welder. I havent used it yet but since i bought it, a friend of mine offered his near new Lincoln MIG to me for dirt cheap so although i dont really need it, i may buy it.
