I have an 88 dodge dakota with 205000 miles on it. The motor runs great, and it shifts 1, 2, and 3 just fine, but the electronic overdrive is intermittent. It makes no difference whether I push the o/d button on or off.

Any ideas?

Had a freind with an explorer that had the same problem, ended up being some sort of switch.

check the wires for the O/D switch. See if any shorts are present.

no shorts, but I am thinking about replacing the overdrive button itself.

Just trying to see if the truck is worth keeping. I'm only getting 15 mpg right now.

Look on top of your tranny. Of corse under the truck...anyways...there is a small diode or relay switch there . they do go bad. It should be a green looking thing about the size of a matchbox. Hope that helps....good luck

before u replace n e thing make sure u have power to the switch. if u have a multi meter or can use one make sure there is continuity in the wires as well cause it might not be the switch. hope this can help. n e questions just ask if i don't know somebody will. matt. i am a technician so i might be able to help on some stuff.

If I push the button to turn the o/d "off" the light comes on... so I guess it has power coming to it. All the fuses are good too.

I'm gonna check out that thing on top of the tranny though... Thanks.
